CINCO De MAYO

Article by Lauren M.

Hot, hot, hot!

The Cinco de Mayo potluck was really hot!  There were many different kinds of home made pico de gallio everywhere you looked.  Our members really know how to throw a fantastic pot luck.  There were at least 15 to 20 Mexican dishes and desserts, we were all stuffed with plenty left over for the dance that night.  The home made rum and brandy flavored flan was a big hit.  The music at the dance was extra special.  Marty, our regular DJ, has added a new twist to the hit parade.  Instead of depending just on a collection of CD's, she is now able to connect to the internet and download songs directly to her computer and play them right away.  Thanks Marty for adding that extra touch to your DJ'ing.  Lauren M. is a great help with the music mixing!  Thanks to every one that came.  Be sure to check on the date of our next dance and come prepared with a list of music you would like to hear.

MOTHER'S DAY BRUNCH

Article by Lauren M.

The dads and kids really spoiled the moms of the ranch on Mother's Day.  Five dads and several kids put on a spread for around 30 people.  The kitchen was open and it was really hopping with all of the men folk dancing around each other.  A variety of pancakes, scrambled eggs, homemade biscuits, sausage gravy, and hash browns were cooked up for the ladies in waiting.  The food was superb and the moms relaxed drinking mimosas while the men cleaned up.

Thank you to all the people who showed up to make it a wonderful Mother's Day.

SPLISH!  SPLASH!!

Article by Lorie C.

Thank you to everyone who generously donated their change to the kids for the Kids Coin Jump on Saturday, May 24, there was over $55.00 up for grabs!  The kids had a great time diving not once, but twice.  All the kids were winners and had a great time diving to the middle of the deep end of the pool.

ABSOLUTELY WONDERFUL

Article by Susie V.

Cooks were coming out of the woodwork for Memorial Day Weekend.  That is Star Ranch!  Thank you to Frank G., Lorie C. & Gail P., Alan & Linda F. (visitors), Yvonne & David P., G. Mike & Pam W., and Tom & Susie V.  Everyone cooking a different meal made cooking a lot easier and it gave everyone time to play!  If anyone wants to take a stab at cooking,  Star Ranch is the place to start.  If you are interested in volunteering please contact Paul L. at ptlev@peoplepc.com or the office at info@starranch.net or by phone at 512-273-2257 and we will put you on the list.  Thank you again to all of the volunteers who gave a little bit of their time each day to make the wonderful and delicious meals we all enjoyed!

MEMORIAL DAY

Article by Debra L.

Not only were cooks coming out of the woodwork, so were the people!  We had a wonderful fun crowd out playing games, lounging or sunning by the pool, enjoying the shade of the trees and pavilion, and playing games in the clubhouse.  In other words, the club was hopping.  The band played Saturday night, the tournaments went off without a hitch on Sunday and everyone lazed away the day and packed up for home on Monday.  Tournaments were played in Petanque, Darts, Volleyball, Mexican Train, and Yahtzee; and, our winners were:

Petanque: 1st Place: Paul O. & Terry P.; 2nd Place: Eugene G. & Ken B.

 Darts: 1st Place: Dina P. & Chris P.; 2nd Place: Terry P. & Debra L.

Volleyball: 1st Place: Dina P., Chris P., Linda A., Richard S., Russell S.; 2nd Place: Haley S., Jim B., Gail P., Terry P., Josh K.

Mexican Train: 1st Place: Terry K.; 2nd Place: Debra L.

Yahtzee: 1st Place: Peg L,; 2nd Place: Louise A.

Kids Shuffleboard: 1st Place: Sami A. & Dylan Li.; 2nd Place: Michael B. & Jacob P.

All first place winners took home a Sahnoan Towel and all second place winners got to gobble up their choice of two novelties or one pint of ice cream!  Congratulations to all of our winners.  It was a pleasure to see all of the families, friends, guests and members out and about on this holiday weekend.

50th ANNIVERSARY T-SHIRT TOURNAMENTS

We are continuing the 50th Anniversary celebrations!  Last year we had theme dances counting down the decades.  This year, during our 50th Anniversary year, we are hosting T-shirt tournaments.  We are having one T-shirt tournament a month.  Feb, March and April saw a reoccurrence of some of the old tournaments that used to be played:  Horseshoes, washers, petanque, shuffleboard, and of course, volleyball will be featured once each month.  The Council is designing a special 50th Anniversary T-Shirt to be given as special awards.  Get your team together and if you have a suggestion on what else we can play, that would be great!  Anyone remember how to play badminton?

THE BEGINNING OF THE SAHNOANS
AND STAR RANCH

By Merle and Ditto S., Charter Members
(From April 1996 Sahnoan Star)

In 1957 six couples who were members of the Sanantans, a nudist group in San Antonio, were unhappy with the owner and the small facilities.   The club is now at the bottom of Lake Calaveras.  These six couples met in Yoakum, Texas under a shade tree and drew up the plans for a new club.  An ASA Charter was applied for and the Sahnoans used Yoakum as its club base until land could be found and purchased.  The location needed to be isolated, off all main roads and out of public view.  The land the Sahnoans now occupy was available for under $5,000 and was purchased by Tom and Cecil Knight for the home of the Sahnoans.  This abandoned peanut farm had a government allotment of four acres, that could be planted in peanuts.  Along with selling this allotment to its neighbor and the generosity of Uncle Sam and his soil conservation plan, the land was actually a government gift.  Roads were built, power brought in, a well dug, pool and volleyball courts and a nice club house were soon built.  All this was started officially January, 1958 and has grown with many of the original members who paid their $35 rental fee in 1958 and are still members.  Something has to be right or this club would never have kept its long term members.  A third of our members have been coming to Star Ranch for 20 years or more.  This secluded paradise has been a vacation land for fortunate members who cannot say "I have no place to go".  Star Ranch has always been a family club and has the same policy as was drawn up in Yoakum, Texas and is still in effect today.   One surviving charter couple remains members and, with the exception of two who are no longer members, the rest have transferred their memberships to the promised land.

Maintaining the peace and tranquility at star Ranch has not been easy.   Individuals have tried for years to destroy the net that was drawn up by its founders in Yoakum that held this organization together for all these years.

New members to the Sahnoan family have wanted changes that were never good for the club.  Fortunately, the governing body held the old philosophy -- All changes should be only for the good of the club.  And this is what has held the Sahnoan family together and made Star Ranch your place we all call a "Home Away From Home".
(End of the Article).

The above article shows what the Sahnoans are, a Family.  As shown by this article, it has not always been a smooth and easy ride.  However, we are still here and enjoying the lifestyle.

The article was correct that the grounds "officially" opened in January, 1958; however we are celebrating as of the purchase and charter member date of September 10th, 1957.

This means we will be celebrating Fifty Years of family nudism at Star Ranch as Sahnoans from September 10th, 2007 to September 10th, 2008.
